Vilma Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies within MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on comparative molecular genetics, canine genome mapping, and cancer genetics.
Dr. Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan received her Ph.D. from the University of Istanbul Medical School, and completed her postdoctoral training in human genetics at the University of Michigan. Prior to joining MSU, she held a Senior Research Fellow position in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Yuzbasiyan-Gurkan's laboratory seeks to understand the molecular genetics of cancer and cancer stem cells. Her team uses the isolated gene pools of purebred dogs to map and identify cancer susceptibility and other genetic disease loci, and aims to translate these molecular findings to useful prognostic tools and therapeutic targets.
