ABOUT
Muraleedharan Nair is a Professor in the Department of Horticulture. His research focuses on discovery, isolation, and identification of phytochemicals with potential as phytomedicines to manage or treat diseases such as cancer.
Dr. Nair received his Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Calicut. He then received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of the West Indies. Dr. Nair is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Chartered Chemist, UK. Prior to joining MSU, he held positions at Vere Technical Institute, St. George’s College, and the Plant Cell Research Institute.
RESEARCH
Dr. Nair’s research investigates the efficacy, toxicity, mode of action and dosage of identified phytochemical(s) to evaluate these products as functional food constituents/nutraceuticals and phytomedicines. The Nair Lab’s expertise is bioassay-directed discovery, purification and chemical characterization of natural products using anticancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial, nematicidal and insecticidal assays. This group also analyzes structure and structure-activity relationships of natural products that have the potential to be developed as alternative medicines/botanical drugs.
